PHALUT

Phalut or Falut the second highest peak of West Bengal, India is a part of the Singalila Ridge in the Himalayas. It is also in the border of Nepal, Sikkim and West Bengal. Trekkers, who trek to Sandakphu, further plan an onward trek to Phalut. The word Phalut has been derived from the Lepcha word ‘Fak-Luk’ which means Barren Peak. Even the last stretch of Phalut is barren which is quite opposite to the fact that there are dense forests in the lower level. Singalila pass is just 17 km away from Phalut. The indigenou’s tribes who reside surrounding the mountain peak are known as Falutains by outsiders. Falutians have a 300 year history of worshipping the mountain peak, and even believe that Phalut is an omniscient god.
